Is the area bicycle friendly?
Yes, Saugatuck and Douglas are both extremely bike-friendly, welcoming bicycles throughout their downtowns. The Blue Star Trail is connected to Blue Star Highway, which is right around the corner from the lodge and makes it convenient to ride your bike 2 miles to downtown Saugatuck. If you’re up for a longer ride, you can continue down Blue Star Trail all the way to South Haven, Michigan. For more information on Blue Star Trail, checkout Friends of the Blue Star Trail.
Where can we rent bikes?
Blue Star Barns rents bicycles and is conveniently located at 3483 Blue Star Hwy. They can be reached at (269) 906-1265. In the Elements Bike Rental is another rental spot which can be reached at (269) 355-3669. Big Lake Outfitters is another one-stop-shop that offers bike rentals.
What is the Interurban?
The Interurban offers curb-to-curb transportation services for residents and visitors in Saugatuck, Saugatuck Township, and Douglas. They have recently expanded service to select locations in Fennville. The cost is typically $1 per person, with the rides to the Modales Wines, Virtue Cider, and Fenn Valley Vineyards at $5 per person. You can call the Interurban at 269-847-1418 to request service, or download their app.
Uber and Lyft may be available in the area, depending on the time of year. Additional transportation options include Cyndi's Moonlight Express (269-910-3222),Tone's Saugatuck/Douglas Taxi (269-543-3355), and Old Harbor Shuttle (616-215-6373)
How is the beach?
Oval Beach, Douglas Beach, Saugatuck Dunes State Park, Pier Cover Park Beach, and Laketown Beach are nearby beaches directly on Michigan’s coast. If your group is planning a trip to Oval beach, we suggest you arrive as early as possible, as the parking lot often reaches capacity in the summer. The gates to Oval Beach typically open at 9am. Another great option is South Haven with two downtown beaches (South Beach and North Beach), about 20-25 minutes away.
